PRESTO: Workshop on Programmable Routers for the
Extensible Services of
TOmorrow
Workshop on Programmable Routers for the Extensible Services of TOmorrow (PRESTO)
May 30-31, 2007
Princeton University, Princeton NJ

Recently, there has been renewed interest in the networking research
community in re-architecting the distribution of functions in an IP
network. This effort can be classified as dis-aggregation of router
functions into various components and well-defined interfaces, to enable
deployment of richer services and easier management of the network.
Separately, researchers and practitioners in the industry have been
exploring the notion of open routers, which allows new functionality to
be easily added into the routers, as well as exploring router
virtualization as a way to support a diverse set of applications and
users. These efforts spans the range of open-source routing
software to routers that expose an application programming interface
(API), thereby enabling deployment of new services in the network.
This workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between
researchers and industry practitioners with a goal of driving service
innovation in IP networks using novel extensible router architectures.
Our goals are to:
- Convene a focused group of researchers and practitioners who
are concerned with, or working on, re-architecting of network elements
or functions and/or developing services based on these developments.
- Develop a better understanding of the specific problems
(technical, operational, etc) that router dis-aggregation is meant to
address.
- Exchange ideas about current approaches to network
element/function dis-aggregation and how functionality and interfaces
should evolve to support that.
This workshop is planned as a by-invitation event involving:
-
A ten-minute "position statement" presentation by each attendee
- A collection of "discussions" on specific dis-aggregation topics
- Ample time for informal discussion and socializing
The outcome of the workshop will be a report that summarizes the
position statements of each attendee (and ensuing discussions) and
general discussion.
Attendees are expected to:
- Write a 1-2 page position statement on a topic related to the
opening up or dis-aggregation of network elements or functions in
advance of the workshop (these write-ups will be made available on the
Web before the meeting)
- Prepare a ten-minute talk summarizing the position statement,
for presentation at the workshop (these talks will serve as provocative
"Introductions" at the beginning of the workshop)
- Agree to participate in discussion/debate on specific aspects
of router dis-aggregation (e.g., what are the perceived problems being
addressed, why would dis-aggregating functionality solve these
problems, what is the "right" way to split functionality etc). Details
of the format (panels vs. informal discussion) and specific
topics will be decided and communicated closer to the workshop based on
the position statements of participants.
The logistics for the workshop are as follows:
